The veil is a necessary appendix to the third density experience upon this planet and regardless of the intellectual comprehension, advanced theoretical musings or varying illuminated slants on the same core truth, the veil remains in place even if severely depleted of its sustainability from its penetration by any being. The veil does not merely refer to the simple forgetting of one's true identity and the nature of the encompassing reality but includes the very existence and personality any incarnated being undertakes.
This jumping the threshold, as you called it, which occurs as a result of any being which reaches a level where they may mentally or spiritually operate within parameters which appear to surpass the boundaries of the confines of the third density awareness and have a sense of sheer connectivity to the very source of things, is host to a wide range of potentials and attributes. No two entities will work with intelligent infinity the same way.
One may experience 'Unity Consciousness Mode' as clairvoyance, another may realize that any and every question which enters the mind may instantly be answered in vivid detail by simply entering pious silence, another may know UCM as a feeling of tranquil yet powerful emptiness and stillness acting as the foundation for baseline consciousness, and still another might figure that the entrance into UCM is what allows them to know with absolute certainty that the external and internal realities are intricately connected by observing how the seer may affect the seen from a distance with the mind.
It is entirely possible for anybody to return to the state of unity in various degrees with the One Infinite Creator, regardless of the degree with which their ego takes the helms of their life. If one sets an unwavering intent and will to do work with the One which generates their very awareness and empowers this call with daily reverence and loving service to All in Its name, then It will comply with benevolent magnificence.
The ego is not a burden or a blessing though at times it appears to be both. Even if its very existence is rooted in a seemingly illusory nature, its function is to provide you, the individuated portion of consciousness which spawned from and will return to but has never ceased being at one with the Creator, with the means of learning, evolving and growing in this spiritual arena. It, however, is not permanent, and there exists a point for any who pursues the studies of spiritual understanding where the ego will, after bearing witness to or becoming aware of any "deeper" truths that it will be faced with its own dissipation, not into nothingness, but unity. Yet, the ego is persistent and unless maintenance is done to tame it into submitting, it will continue to return to drive your thoughts and general state of mind this or that odd direction, once more thrusting you back into the role you voluntarily signed up to as the temporary personality you exist as at this very moment.
When the ego finally subsides and one has pinpointed and smoothed out every nuance of your psyche, the one which truly observes through you will be free to better work in tandem with the tiny fractal focal point of awareness we currently perceive ourselves as.
